Kansas City R.F.C. vs. Denver Highlanders

October 2nd 2005               Cook Park

Denver, CO

Kansas City R.F.C. traveled to Denver for their first league match up against the Highlanders.  The match was held in Cook Park, home pitch of another local club the Denver Harlequins.  The skies were clear and the match was played under unseasonably warm conditions for the region. The visitors eecked out the victory 22-16.

The sure foot of Jimmy Logue may have saved the day again.  His play in general has been very consistent and improving over the last couple of weeks and he did not disappoint last Saturday.  His kicks at goal and accurate punting ability have played a large role in City’s recent success.  His effort on the day also earned him his second man of the match award.  He blocked a kick early on recovering it for a try in the first 10 and in the closing ticks had a sweetly taken drop goal to all but seal the deal for the visitors.

Logue's block reversed what had been a solid start for the Highlanders, who worked their attack well but couldn't get points from their efforts. A bad pass, a knock on, or a penalty seemed to kill off too many chances.  They had a couple good ball carriers that KC had a hell of a time bringing down.

Brad Nelson slotted two penalty goals after all that to keep Denver close at 7-6, but again the tries were hard to come by, as several breakaways didn't quite make the line.

KC's wings did plenty of damage, helped along by some average Highlander tackling, and both Dustin Marks and Fraser Monague scored tries to give KC a 19-6 lead. Denver battled back, though, and after Nelson slotted another goal, the Highlanders finally hit pay dirt, with Scott Bredehoeft being the beneficiary of some smart work from the forwards. It was 19-16 then, and Logue's drop goal would put it away.

Fraser Monague and Andrew Jackson made their debuts in starting roles this weekend and Dustin Marks will more than likely see his last for some time.  Dustin has been putting off surgery on his hand for some time to keep him in hoops.  Unfortunately Dustin will have to go under the knife next week to make sure he’s eligible for his next career choice, the few and the proud have been knocking on the door for some time now and have hooked a good one.  We’ll try to work on his discipline sir.

 Good luck Piglet!

City’s old boys also made the trek to not only support their club but would get in a little action ta boot.  The blue hairs looked sharp at times and winded at others.  They actually appeared winded while looking sharp which takes some doing, final tally 26-7.  It was great to see these cagie veterans back on the pitch and even better to meet some folks most of the current players don’t even know about.  Hopefully this will happen more consistently, it can only help an amateur club progress to keep around their wiser more experienced members.

A long road trip was broken up with the occasional hot foot and the usual amount of drama.  Good luck with the training next week DeBerg, he or they won’t dare mouth off or even show their face around your corner after Chicken whips you into shape.
