KANSAS CITY RUGBY

Background

High school rugby has come a long way in the last twenty years. There are now over 1,400 high school teams, and the number grows rapidly every year. As the world’s second most popular sport, it is about time rugby begins to take a meaningful place in high school sports in America.

The Club has had a long tradition of coaching local high schools going all the way back to the days of Richard Hartke, Jim Shetlar and Charles Usher at Central, Xentho Hatton at Olathe, Terry Lewis at Wyandotte County, Mike Lynch at Independence, and Gene Roberts and Don Elliott at Park Hill. Today former members/players Jon Holland, Mike Robke and Danny Gasca coach at Park Hill South, while Kevin Hunn works with the boys at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. City wife Tracey Davies several teams in the Northland, and currently works closely with Liberty, Liberty North, Park Hill and two girls teams. In 2014 we are pleased to have Kevin Kelley and Pat Clifton coaching the team at Shawnee Mission Northwest, Rob Loney coaching at Shawnee Mission East.

Today the objective of the High School Committee, chaired by Jim Shetlar, is to facilitate the growth and improvement of high school rugby in the greater Kansas City area. The club and the Kansas City Rugby Foundation are working in concert is currently working on a formal affiliate program for high schools that will assist with equipment, facilities, registration fees for underprivileged players, coaching assistance and more. If you’d like to donate to the cause, or help in some other way, contact Pat Clifton: [email protected].
