KCRFC 36 - Little Rock 19

The Kansas City Rugby Football Club opened its spring campaign with a 36-19 victory over the Little Rock Stormers Saturday at City Park in Kansas City, Kan. KCRFC never trailed in the game, led 17-7 at halftime, scored five tries and emptied the bench with 20 minutes to play.

Wing Peyton Horton, the nephew of KCRFC alum Brad Boling, made his debut for the club. The talented rookie subbed in at wing near the 60th minute and made a try-saving tackle in his first-ever rugby match.

KCRFC exits the weekend 3-1-1 with 18 points on the league table and in third place in the Mid-America’s North Division behind the Wichita Barbarians (4-0-1, 21 points) and St. Louis Royal Ramblers (4-1, 20 points). By securing the bonus-point win Saturday, City retains control of its own destiny with three league matches to play.

March 21 at Oklahoma City (0-5 with three forfeits), April 11 at the St. Louis Royal Ramblers (Royals and Ramblers merged this season) and April 18 at home against the Wichita Barbarians. If the good guys secure bonus point wins in those three contests, they’ll face Little Rock again for the league championship match April 25. Little Rock is 3-1 in Mid-America play and firmly in first place in the South Division.

Among the highlights of the game was City’s dominant scrum, which earned a penalty try midway through the second half and provided and stellar attacking platform all afternoon.
